Go to the bottom of the image and look under the floor of the cab. This image illustrates the mechanical stoker mechanism through which the coal was carried from the tender to the firebox. These devices were driven by a small steam engine usually attached under the cab, and utilized a screw device, here plainly visible. Mechanical stokers were manufactured by specialist companies supplying the railroads and steam engine builders.
