The photo was taken in January 1965 by Alan Thurlow with #3822 thundering through Tuggerah mid-morning

at about 70mph with the northbound Newcastle Flyer.

The speed was so great that the exhaust was just one repetitive giant hiss.

These locomotives were designed and built at the NSW Railway workshops beginning 1943.

The cab control layout on the 38 class influenced the designers of the British Railways standard class cabs from the 1950s.
