An unknown 35 class heads east from Maitland to Newcastle on the slow lines mid 1960s .

In January 1962 engine number 3521 backs on to the northbound Brisbane Express at Gosford mid-afternoon. To this point the train has been hauled from Sydney Central by a 46 class electric locomotive. The catenary does not extend beyond Gosford. The 35 class will ordinarily take the train as far as Muswellbrook or Tamworth where a 32 class will take over. The train will be in Wallangarra by 07:00 the following morning.

On this occasion, 3521 failed half way between Dora Creek and Awaba and a 60 class locomotive was despatched light engine from Broadmeadow on the up road, crossed at Dora Creek and nosed up behind the train which was then able to proceed to Broadmeadow, where I believe a 48 class diesel-electric replaced 3521. My photo of the passing 60 class did not survive.
