Trainwatching around Altkloster (5 - west of the station).

Here is a classic photo of two westbound freight trains in the early 1950s, taken from the tunnel entrances over the sorting sidings.

Under the electrified wire, is E91 100 on a train returning mostly empty flat wagons to the industrial areas of the Ruhr, but a covered wagon from Italy is in evidence, as is a flat car load. (Engine model is Marklin 39195)

The other train is a clear-stacked Class 59 on an empty coal train, heading for the Saar region. Just in front of the 59 is a "limit of shunt" signpost. (Engine model is Marklin 37054)

This next photo was taken later in the 50s and shows a typical day's traffic at Altkloster. In the background, a train made up of both German and French passenger cars, is waiting at platform 4 on an eastbound. An eastbound freight with industrial products is passing platform 2, and 85010 is just pulling into platform 1 with a westbound train. (Engine model is from starter set 29840)
